Tourists trying their best to keep
gap year travel costs down should try to stay on their feet when in Rome, it has been revealed.
Italy may have just claimed European Tourist top spot in the Times' most recent world's best holiday destinations list, but its capital can still be an expensive place to visit.
Fortunately, thanks to the diligent work by Susan Spano at the Baltimore Sun newspaper, prudent budget travelers need not empty their wallets and purses in a hurry.
She advises that tourists stand at bars in Rome as often as is possible to eat and drink, where the service is unlikely to be included.
Ms Spano notes that even a simple cheap lunch can end up costing up to $15 when tourists opt to sit at a table.
"Elbow to elbow with locals at the counter, you'll find the food is just as good, and it's easier to watch Romans do as they do," she adds.
Meanwhile, the city's vice mayor Mauro Cutrufo recently proposed building more hostels in a bid to boost wavering tourism arrivals
