Parts of New York will be car free on three weekends during August.
A seven-mile length of tarmac running from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Upper East Side will see cars replaced by fitness fanatics, as New York's fitness fanatics take to the streets for some exercise.
The move comes after last week's Car Free Vancouver Day in neighboring Canada, which saw a turnout of more than 125,000 people.
However, the Big Apple's car ban has more poignant political undertones.
New York mayor Michael Bloomberg's announcement follows a decision by the state's assembly to block congestion charging zone proposals.
Backpacking tourists keen to take advantage of the unusually car free streets should make sure they are in Manhattan on the Saturdays of the 9th, 16th and 23rd.
Meanwhile, those keen on getting from one place to another throughout the ban should be rest assured that they will still be able to travel on bicycles, which will be available to rent along the route.
Other fitness activities taking place on the car free streets include dance classes and yoga sessions.
