Engineers have announced that Italy's famed leaning tower of Pisa has been stabilised.
A $40 million (26 million) dollar project, which involved extracting around 70 tonnes of earth from the northern side of the tower, should allow the tower to remain stable for at least another 200 years, experts claim.
The 12th Century structure stands an impressive 183-foot tall, although this is the first time in its long history that it has actually stopped moving.
Engineers made the discovery when monitors embedded in the soil around the tower's foundations showed it had been stopped in its tilt, having been straightened by 19 inches in the seven-year project.
The revelation will no doubt be encouraging for
student travel enthusiasts that have not yet visited the tower, and will perhaps be reassuring for those put off ascending its stairs during its less sturdy days.
