
Croatia is becoming increasingly popular for its "cultural tourism", according to one industry expert.
Tourists planning their
gap year travel may already be aware of Croatia as an up-and-coming beach destination, but this latest revelation could have them revising their plans.
According to Visnja Arambasesc, editor of In Your Pocket guides to Croatia, increasing numbers of tourists are being seduced by what's on offer.
He said: "More and more tourists are coming to Croatia and every year people come for cultural tourism.
"Outside of Zagreb, a lot of people visit the country as there are a lot of castles around, as well as nature and domestic food."
Nearly one million more tourists visited destinations throughout Croatia in 2007 compared to 2006. A majority of those - 9.3 million - of which were foreign tourists.
Meanwhile, the European Bank has pledged 24 million ($37.5 million) of investment for reconstruction and development in Croatia's tourism industry.
