Backpacking tourists heading off to Mexico could be hit by the global credit crunch when they go to buy a tortilla, reports suggest.
The National Chamber for the Tortilla and Dough Industry told Reuters that prices could rise by as much as 18 per cent in coming weeks as a result of rising food prices being felt throughout the globe.
But at least the demand for holidays is set to remain strong, which will at least ensure that Mexico maintains its party atmosphere, according to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC).
However communications and PR manager at the WTTC, Louise Oram, explained that there are likely to be less US tourists around.
She said: "The global economic downturn is having a considerable impact on mature travel and tourism economies, such as the United States.
"There is likely to be a switch from international to domestic travel rather than a contraction in demand for travel and tourism."
Food price rises are nothing new for Mexico, where the price of corn pancakes increased by more than ten per cent last year.
