Booking holidays online is more convenient than going to a travel agent, according to Which? Holiday.
Last year's Travel Technology Initiative Special Report indicated that the number of travel agent branches in the UK reduced by over 1,000 between 2005 and 2007.
The report also suggests that the number of travel agents is set to decline to 2,000 by 2013.
Researcher for consumer watchdog Which? Holiday, Kate Shipp, claims that booking holidays online allows travelers such as
gap year travel students to "tailor the holiday".
She added: "It's also about being able to compare things quickly on price and choice.
"You obviously have choice in a travel agent but you will be restricted perhaps in terms of the holidays on offer."
Meanwhile, author of the Gap Year Book, Charlotte Hindle, told the Independent that those embarking on
gap year travel should "have some skills training to help them travel in a more sensible and informed way".
