Eco-friendly tourists should "consider the alternatives" before selecting a mode of transport between destinations, according to Carbon Footprint.
For
backpacking travelers taking trips across land, perhaps from one country to another, flying will not necessarily produce the most carbon emissions.
Tourists should be more concerned with the specifics of their situation than the type of transport they use the managing director of Carbon Footprint, John Buckley, claimed.
According to the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, a typical journey from London to Paris creates 22kg of CO2 per passenger by train compared to 58kg per passenger by car.
"If someone drives a car from London to Edinburgh and there is only one person in the car, then this would create more carbon emissions than would be attributed to each person flying to Edinburgh in a low cost airline seat," Mr Buckley said.
However, many airlines now give passengers the option of offsetting their carbon emissions on flights by paying a premium cost on top of their ticket.
