Tourists on package holidays are missing out on experiencing the local culture of the countries they visit, new research reveals.
A survey found that almost half of those holidaymakers heading to all-inclusive hotel resorts spend the majority of their time inside the complex.
Some 42 percent of those tourists polled by Halifax do not speak to any local people while on package breaks in exotic locations and a further 75 percent say they do not make an effort to speak the local language.
As well as missing out on aspects of local culture by staying in a resort, many tourists do not experience local cuisine and instead eat at restaurants in the complex.
Paul Birkhead, from Halifax Travel Insurance, said: "Our research strongly suggests that the idea of a holiday, to most, is a room with pool and somewhere to eat."
However, recent research from Post Office found that city breaks to destinations in Eastern Europe are gaining in popularity as holidaymakers look for cheaper and more interesting alternatives to package trips.
