Planning
gap year travel around southern Africa is set to become a lot less time consuming as attempts are made to speed up the establishment of a single visa system.
Members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have reached an agreement to speed up the process of setting up the proposed Univisa system.
The new system will make the
backpacking transition from country-to-country in the SADC area far easier, as well as improving the transition for SADC citizens.
According reports in BuaNews, SADC citizens could even be allowed to travel between countries without a visa.
Moses Rannitsheni of South Africa's department of environmental affairs and tourism claims that the new Univisa system will make travel in the region more efficient.
"The Univisa will facilitate efficient movement in the region, which will positively impact on tourism revenue for all member states," he told the newspaper.
"This process seeks to bring to an end delays and the inconvenience of visa applications," he added.
