Those embarking on
gap year travel alone should do their research before setting off, a leading industry expert has claimed.
According to Kristina Pentland, communications manager for responsibletravel.com, backpackers should "read up as much as possible" in order to develop a knowledge of "local customs and cultures".
Research by the company published in February indicated that there was an 87 per cent year-on-year increase in those enquiring about community-based holidays and
backpacking tours.
Ms Pentland explained that travelers that concentrate on researching the places they are about to visit will "feel better equipped to deal with situations that you find yourself in".
She continued: "You should also book just a few places to stay at the start of your trip - this will give you a base and some time from which to get orientated.
"Always leave messages with other travellers or the place you are staying so people know where you are."
Research by the website also indicated that 37 per cent of bookings in 2007 were by women traveling alone.
