Budapest is the best value city for
backpacking Britons this year, research has revealed.
According to Post Office Travel Services, the Hungarian forint currency has increased least in value against sterling compared to other destinations, at only eight per cent.
Meanwhile, short breaks around Europe still dominate the UK tourist travel itinerary, taking up eight of the top ten places in the Post Office destination charts.
Post Office head of travel Helen Warburton comments that there is an increasing trend towards two or three night short breaks due, in part, to the recent financial turmoil.
She said: "In the eighties there were two significant factors in the expansion of city breaks. The emergence of low cost carriers and a big increase in flights from regional airports brought many more cities within easy reach.
"It was much cheaper to go on two or more breaks during the year than to take a two week holiday. With a credit crunch widely forecast, UK holidaymakers may well follow the same route this year."
Prague remains one of the most costly weekends away for those traveling on sterling exchange rates, with the Czech koruna having increased 22 per cent against the pound.
