Hotels, hostels and attractions across the England's capital have been encouraged to sign up to the Green Tourism for London scheme, it has been revealed.
London Development Agency (LDA) chief executive Manny Lewis has called on businesses across the capital to sign up for the scheme, which will provide advice on how to improve eco-friendly resource and energy management.
Originally set up in October 2007, more than 30 attractions such as the O2 Centre have already signed up for the scheme, which also provides Bronze, Silver and Gold accreditations according to venue performance.
But Mr Lewis told travel weekly that "these hotels and attractions are not just doing their bit for the environment but are making huge savings in their energy and water costs.
"I would encourage all hotels across the capital to get assessed, earn their awards and help ensure London continues to lead the way in tackling global warming."
It is hoped that the scheme will raise London's profile as a eco-friendly
backpacking destination amid growing concern over the environmental impact of tourism.
