Backpacking tourists should take out travel insurance tailored to their specific needs, one independent travel agent has claimed.
Recent research by AA Insurance has suggested that backpackers collectively carry over £1 billion worth of valuables in their rucksacks.
Underlining the increasing reliance on communication and entertainment technology, research also found that the average backpack contains goods worth £450.
However, a spokesperson for Trailfinders suggested that most insurance policies insure items up to a certain value.
However, he continued that the remoteness some of the backpackers regional exploration necessitates "a very different kind of policy, which is perhaps going to cover you with a good 24-hour medical assistance helpline".
"The big piece of advice is that a backpacker shouldn't pick their policy based on price alone, they need to pick it on the quality of what theyre going to get rather than the cheapest policy they can find online," he added.
