Backpacking artisans keen on catching a glimpse of the work of Europe's most revered artists need look no further than the Bilbao in Spain, according to one industry expert.
The northern Basque city is increaingly attracting the interest of the international audience for its blend of culture and beach resorts.
But according to Korina Miller, commissioning editor for Spain and Portugal at Lonely Planet, Bilbao has gained a particular "cultural kudos" boost from the Guggenheim museum.
"Given cultural kudos with the Museo Gugenheim, Bilbao has reinvented itself as a vibrant metropolis, something which is increasingly recognised by international visitors.
"Those after something more cultural than beach resorts and slightly off the beaten track are tuning into Bilbao's charm," she added.
Even architecturally, the museum offers something for tourists to appreciate, clad in a titanium wrapping and boasting 19 galleries showcasing works by Picasso, Tapies, Warhol and Klein.
