Gap year travel is becoming increasingly popular among the over-30s, according to new research.
In a survey by American Express travel insurance, around 90 per cent of those planning on embarking on
gap year travel in the UK are aged over 30.
In a sign that
student travel is set to be overtaken by silver travel, nearly 40 per cent of
gap year travel is done by the over-55s in the UK.
But Joanne Field of American Express travel insurance warns that young
backpacking and
flashpacking enthusiasts should take a leaf out of the book of their older travel companions when it comes to travel insurance.
"Whilst the over 25's taking a gap break are unlikely to be on such tight budgets as younger travellers, it can still be tempting to try and skimp on insurance.
"Not all policies are the same and it really pays to do your homework and carefully consider the level of cover in relation to your plans," she added.
Meanwhile, recent research by Saga revealed that over-50s are becoming increasingly enamoured by thrill-seeking activity trips.
