Backpacking on a budget and staying eco-friendly will not be as simple as making eco-labelling mandatory for aircraft, according to an industry expert.
The House of Commons Treasury Select Committee made a recommendation last month for the adoption of eco-labelling on UK airlines.
According to the committee proposals, environmentally concerned travelers would have the flight's environmental impact provided at the point of purchase.
But according to a spokesperson for Mott MacDonald Group, the labelling system would not give an accurate idea of environmental impact and could give those embarking on
student travel and
gap year travel a false impression of savings.
"Take two aeroplanes of exactly the same size, make, power output and engines," he said.
"In one put 150 people; in the other put 200 - the unit output in terms of emissions per passenger per mile changes dramatically."
Meanwhile Europe's largest regional airline Flybe has welcomed the select committee recommendation.
