Tourists have been urged to do their research before traveling in order to avoid "terrible faux pas", according to Holiday Which? magazine.
This tenet is none more true that those
backpacking and on
gap year travel excursions to remote destinations around the world.
Common cultural hiccups include chewing gum in Singapore or pointing with ones feet in Thailand.
Which? Holiday editor, Lorna Cowan, said: " Depending on where you are, something as simple as eating dinner with the wrong hand or drinking cappuccino after breakfast can be seen as a terrible faux pas.
"If in doubt, make sure you read up on local customs before you travel, or observe how the locals behave. As the old adage goes, when in Rome, do as the Romans do."
Recent research by the magazine also indicated that more and more holidaymakers are opting to book their own flights and
hostels rather than going through an agent.
