The
gap year travel bug has become so prevalent among students that one US university is even considering making it an official enrolment option.
Student travel has long been an established part of the British university mantra, allowing undergraduates to make an application one year in advance.
But now one of America's most established academic institutions, Princeton University, has set up a working group to consider allowing students to take
gap year travel before they begin studying.
In an announcement on February 19th, university president Shirley Tilghman explained that the new "bridge-year programme" would help students "thrive" as citizens.
She said a
gap year travel experience would "help our students thrive as citizens and leaders in that world, and increase their ability to appreciate all of the elements of a Princeton education".
Meanwhile, York University in Canada has already implemented a similar scheme, whereby students have their place put on hold if they decide to embark on
student travel or volunteer work.
