EU-US Open Skies Agreement will bring the costs of air fares down, according to the Air Transport Users Council (AUC).
Gap year travelers and those
backpacking at destinations across the Atlantic will benefit from the agreement negotiated between the United States and the European Union.
Backpacking to destinations such as New York and Boston, as well as through flights to Canadian cities such as Vancouver will become cheaper because of increased competition between airlines.
James Fremantle, industry affairs manager at the AUC, explained that he expects air fares to mimic the dramatic drop as was seen across Europe.
"When Europe was liberalised the e market brought in airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair and the air fares dropped dramatically.
"BA have already started with their business class only flight from Paris to New York direct, so thats another choice for passengers than what was available previously," he added.
A recent Civil Aviation Authority report stated that around 60 per cent of UK long haul routes will be covered by the new agreement.
