Backpacking enthusiasts keen to access more remote areas of the continent will now find it easier following the expansion of the low-cost airline industry.
The improved accessibility to regional areas in Spain has also made them more popular with mainstream tourists too.
However, increased foreign investment has also no doubt had an impact on the availability of
hostels and cheap accommodation, while providing differing cultural experiences within closer proximity.
Business director of Primelocation.com, Louise Hall, explained that low-cost airlines have made hard to reach areas far more accessible.
"The further expansion of low-cost airlines into smaller regional airports in European countries has made areas originally hard to reach very accessible."
And those on
gap year travel are set to be provided with even more options, with British Airways preparing to launch two new short haul routes from three London airports to remote locations such as Tunis, Faro and Tunis.
