Backpacking in South Korea looks set for a boost with a spate of publications by the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO).
Significant effort to shine valuable light on the country's unexplored 5,000-year-old cultural history is tackled with exceptional gusto in the Travel Guide to Korea and Accommodation in Korea advice pamphlets.
Such is the increased appeal that swathes of Australian and New Zealand
backpacking and
gap year travel tourists have made their way to the country, boosting their visitor numbers by 17.9 per cent and 20.5 per cent respectively.
For the budget student traveller, there is no shortage of
budget accommodation and
hostels.
Notably, president of the KTO, Oh Jee-Chul, hopes the Olympic Games' proximity will raise the country's profile.
"As Korea is close to the Olympic Games hosting country, we can attract some visitors to China to Korea as well," said Mr Oh.
Officials are aiming high, with hopes that Korea will become a top ten tourist destination.
But as a country already popular for its break-dancing, drawing attention to the country's historic cultural merits will no doubt raise the country's tourism profile.
