A 500-year-old hotel in Gloucester could be redeveloped into a
hostel for
backpacking travelers, it has been revealed.
The Fleece Hotel is at the centre of the Blackfriars' area cultural regeneration to boost its tourism industry.
South west Regional Development Agency's (RDA) Gloucester development manager, Alison Hatcher, explained that it is important that the Fleece Hotel remains in keeping with the area's overall rejuvenation.
"There are a lot of exciting opportunities here and we want to make sure we decide on the best mix of uses to both make the city a more attractive place for people to live and visit."
The south west of England RDA is to investigate how the Fleece hotel, which historically served as accommodation for pilgrims visiting the tomb of Edward II, can be brought up to date in line with moves to create a cultural centre in Blackfriars.
Backpacking and
gap year travel tourists could form a major component of the visitors to the area, with proposals including an arts and crafts business workspace.
