Those
backpacking or taking adventure holidays, such as
diving breaks, over long distances are at "more risk" according to STA travel.
The increased popularity of adventure holidays such as
hiking breaks in desolate or inaccessible areas require the greater costs of rescue to be taken in to account.
A spokesperson for the travel agent noted that higher repatriation costs, for example in case of injury, are more likely on long-haul trips.
She said: "Any adventure holiday is just that, an adventure, this means doing something out of the original or off the beaten track, requiring services such as search and rescue etc.
"With skiing and diving holidays being increasingly popular and accessible, considerations such as the costs of mountain rescue and de-compression tanks must be taken into account."
Mintel Gap Year report for July 2005 indicated that the global gap year market will grow by £11 billion by 2010.
