Those not keen on taking a ski holiday because of injury need fear no more, because the risk of hurting yourself is far less than it used to be.
According to Carl Ettinger, Professor of Orthopeadics at the University of Vermont, the risk of injury nowadays is a little in one in every 500 ski trips, reports the Wall Street Journal.
But for those put off the piste because of a potential leg injury the risk is even lower, down by 83 per cent compared to 1973 - equal to about one injury in every 4,000 ski holidays.
In fact, Professor Ettinger notes that many injuries are caused by skiers tampering with their own bindings without being qualified to do so.
He said: "The risk of lower-leg injury can be reduced by an annual visit to a well-equipped ski shop that employs properly trained technicians."
The Professor also notes that minor skiing injuries, such as a twisted knee, can be avoided by taking the appropriate tips for knee-friendly skiing widely available.
