Tourists could avoid paying more for flights by reading the small print, according to consumer watchdog Which?.
Research conducted by Holiday Which? last month revealed that budget airlines can charge as much as £28 more than the advertised price of a ticket on the return flight.
But by taking a little more time with bookings,
backpacking tourists looking for cheap flights can avoid the allure of the "smooth marketing spiel" offered by added extras.
Claire Lilley, head of research, said: "For a lot of people, price is still the main thing that makes their decision for them at the end of the day.
"Sometimes they put things in and they've already ticked the box for you - for travel insurance, for example - so make sure you un-tick those things," she added.
According to the Which? research, the worst budget airline offender was Ryanair, which charged £20 for passengers to check their bags in and £4 just to use the check-in desk.
