The Canary Islands is the most popular winter sun destination, according to research by CheapFlights.
But while British favourites such as Tenerife and Lanzarote still top the charts, Dubai is the surprise entry, reaching number four in the destination list.
According to Francesca Escery, general manager at Cheapflights, January travel is becoming an increasingly popular means of curing the post-Christmas blues.
She said: "And the end of the holiday season brings on the January Blues which, coupled with this unpleasantly wet weather, makes it a very popular time of year to search for travel.
"January is a great time to grab a bargain," she added.
Other surprise destinations include Bangkok, Cape Town, Orlando and Goa.
According to travel agent Expedia, 2008 will see Briton's flocking to destinations with a nostalgic link to their past.
A survey conducted by the agent indicated that more than one quarter of tourists will jetting off to a destination with memories of youth associations.
