The average Briton spends around £514 per person on a trip abroad, new research has revealed.
According to research by Alliance & Leicester, UK tourists and backpackers spend a total of £34.4 billion on trips abroad every year.
The lender's personal loans manager, Richard Al-Dabbagh, noted that families could spread holiday costs throughout the year by taking out a loan.
He added: "Holidays are meant to be a time of enjoyment but often the cost of going abroad, especially for a family, can be quite substantial."
In addition, the study reveals that a further £23.3 billion is spent while abroad.
However, the Telegraph travel correspondent, Fred Mawer takes a different view.
According to Mr Mawer, the cheap hotels and
hostels offered in combination with excellent cuisine make the north of France the ideal 2008 budget destination.
