Guatemala's president has announced that one of the country's ancient Mayan City sites will become a tourist park.
According to Reuters, the Mayan archeological site, located in the Peten jungle in the north of the country, will soon be accessible to tourists.
President Alvaro Colom commented that the Mirador site, home to the ancient Mayan civilization dating back to 900 AD, will beat even the Egyptian pyramids offering in terms of archeology.
He told the news agency: "Among the structures is the world's most massive pyramid and I think it even beats the Egyptians by around a meter."
The Peten Jungle is already home to wealth of established tourist attractions, particularly popular among those
backpacking around the country.
Attractions include the Island-city of Flores, the Agueteca ruins and the Chimino Island lodge.
It is hoped the new park will help promote development in the region, making use of the ruined city 2,000 years after it was built.
