Hostels staff in south Australia are to receive training in recognising and dealing with people suffering from mental illness under new plans, it has been revealed.
Health department representatives met with the Backpackers Association in Adelaide to discuss the proposals following the death of 22-year-old Toby Garret in Perth last month, reports ABC News.
Tourists and travelers
backpacking around the country will no doubt be pleased with the positive news, with
hostels also being given access to a mental health hotline to help them when at work.
According to south Australia's director of mental health operations, Derek Wright, the measures are precautionary.
"There are people who will be international travelers or interstate travelers who have some form of mental health problem but take medication and don't actually require any other care," he told the news agency.
Ms Garret's body was discovered in Adelaide's west parklands in the early hours of New Year's Eve.
