A new adaptation of the Diary of Anne Frank will take to the stage in Madrid's Calderon Theatre next month - but this time as a musical.
February is set to become the month that will likely see critics the world over flock to the Spanish capital in a bid to cast a watchful eye over the re-enactment of the 13-year-old's now infamous diary.
Detailing the plight of the young Ms Frank's family secretly hidden away from the Nazi's during World War II, the diary account will gain musical homage in this eagerly anticipated 22-strong cast production.
But far from reflecting the stage-musical tradition of jovial celebratory song, the show's director, Rafael Alvero, expects the performance to play out as a far more "emotional" affair.
He said: "When I first came here, they had this doubt about how somebody can do a musical of a story like this.
"Of course this is emotional. The thing we want to do is through the music, to understand the story better."
