The age-old idea that Christmas is spent at home is being challenged by tourists, research by ebookers.com reveals.
According to the research, around 25 per cent of those surveyed will be spending Christmas abroad instead of at home.
Some 22 per cent will be using their holiday time to spend the best of the festive season with family, while a surprising 25 per cent will travel alone.
Meanwhile, a similar study by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) estimated that as many as 3.5 million Britons will be heading abroad for the Christmas and new year period in search of warmer climates.
ABTA president, Justin Fleming, said: "This is always a peak time for travel as people make the most of the bank holidays and once again there are a record number travelling."
But this message of seasonal traveler cheer is accompanied by the prospect of an altogether busier travelling experience, with UK airports reporting a surge in those travelling abroad this Christmas.
