Touring backpackers and gap year students should be selective when it comes to transport in foreign countries, an industry expert has warned.
According to John Cummings who runs Safetrek courses for student travelers, being hurt in a road accident carries greater statistical risk than being murdered.
This follow reports of the murders of two young British travelers - Lindsay Ann Hawker in Japan and Meredith Kercher in Italy
Mr Cummings told the Mirror: "Travel during the day if you can.
"If a vehicle doesn't look roadworthy or a driver looks unfit to drive, get the next bus."
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) lists five locations where injuries are most likely to occur when on holiday, including roads and remote locations.
All travelers are recommended to take out travel insurance, but are warned by the FCO to check the small print to make sure all relevant aspects of the trip are covered.
This advice perhaps applies particularly to gap year students and backpackers who take round the world trips, where increased travel and transport demands naturally increase the risk of accident and injury.
