An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit the north coast of Chile on November 14th 2007.
Two people have been reported dead so far. They were from the small town of Tocopilla, located 40 kilometers from the epicentre in Quillagua.
Some 150 people have been injured in the worst affected region of Antofagasta, where over 5,000 homes have been destroyed.
The Chilean government has pledged 1,000 temporary homes and has provided some 14 tonnes worth of relief aid and supplies.
Reports also suggest that the tremor was felt as far away as neighbouring Peru and Bolivia.
Two major replicas have since been registered, measuring 6.2 and 6.8 on the Richter scale, with two to three replica tremors being felt every hour, according to the United States Geographical Survey.
Another earthquake hit the border of Ecuador and Peru yesterday, according to reports.
The Ecuadorian Geophysics Institute said it "had reports that the quake was felt throughout the country. So far there were no reports of damage".
