British Airways (BA) has announced that it will no longer allow surfboards to be carried on its flights.
Previously one of the few airlines that accepted larger items such as surfboards without an extra charge, BA has changed its policy because it believes such bulky baggage is "not suitable".
BA said: "The redefined list of sports equipment takes into account a number of factors such as limitations of airport baggage systems and size and weight restrictions in the aircraft hold."
The ban will become effective from November 6th 2007 in a move that has angered groups such as the British Surfing Association (BSA).
BSA national director Karen Walton commented: "We'd find it extremely hard to believe that the average short board would be more difficult to handle when compared to a double bass or a full bag of golf clubs."
BA has banned all boards exceeding two meters, regardless of weight.
Other airlines, such as Air Southwest, have taken the opportunity to reassure passengers surfboards will continue to be carried as normal on their flights.
