The onslaught of a vicious typhoon has caused the evacuation of 200,000 people from Shanghai, China.
Typhoon Wipha, expected to hit land early on Wednesday morning (September 19th), is likely to bring up to 200 millimeters of rain, according to early forecasts.
With one Taipei resident already killed as the storm swept over north Taiwan, exposed Shanghai residents have been moved to temporary accommodation.
Ding Ruoyang, a meteorologist at the Shanghai Metropolitan Bureau, told the Xinhua News Agency: "This is the first time in ten years that the eye of the storm will probably make landfall in Shanghai."
"The evacuation includes residents who live in old and dangerous houses, workers who live in temporary construction site structures, as well as workers living near the shore," he added.
Typhoon warnings have also been issued in nearby Zhejiang province and Fujian in the south.
Some 236 people were killed when Typhoon Winnie hit the Chinese coast in 1997.
