Hungry backpackers traveling in South America should swing by Venezuela, after a record-breaking culinary delight was prepared.
The Food Ministry has claimed the record for the world's largest pot of soup, after officials concocted a 3,960 gallon portion of 'sancocho' stew, reports the Associated Press
According to Rafael Oropeza, food minister, the pot contained 6,600 pounds of chicken, 4,400 pounds of beef and tons of vegetables.
Allegedly large enough to feed 60,000 to 70,000 people, the soup was stirred by workers standing on raised platforms, armed with poles.
Though the 5,413 gallon pot was only three-quarters full, the Venezuelan recipe easily surpassed the previous record, established by a 1,413 gallon pot of soup prepared in Durango, Mexico, in July.
"We didn't add more for security reasons," Oropeza said. "There's plenty for second helpings."
He added that the soup was a 'Bolivarian stew', a reference to South American cultural hero Simon Bolivar, the inspiration for the socialist movement led by Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
