A landslide caused by a cloudburst has killed at least 60 people in the Indian Himalayas, Reuters reports.
The entirety of Dharla village in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh was buried by the landslide last night, (Tuesday August 14th), including its health center.
Local police office Vidya Chand Negi explained the devastation to Reuters.
"There is so much debris which has fallen on the houses that nothing except a few lanterns are visible," he commented.
"Huge boulders 20 to 25-feet high have completely crushed the houses."
He confirmed that five bodies had been recovered and 55 people remained missing.
"We don't expect any survivors," he added, stating that bodies may have already been washed away by a nearby river.
The army has been called in to help search for bodies.
Many of those killed were laborers involved in the construction of hydro-electric power stations, reports Reuters.
