Instability in Fiji has led to the US Department of State advising its citizens against travelling to the area.
The warning replaces the public announcement issued on February 28th 2007 and has been given as a result of the coup on December 5th, which saw the Commander of Fiji's military depose the Fijian elected government.
Although the situation in Fiji is currently calm, the US department said that some rights are still not certain as the "independence of Fiji's law enforcement and judicial systems appears compromised".
It warned that a public sector strike or similar labour action could take place in the next few weeks.
"American citizens in Fiji should remain vigilant, particularly in public and near military sites in the greater Suva area, and should avoid demonstrations and large crowds," the public announcement said.
"Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and become violent unexpectedly."
