At least three people have been killed in a train crash on the Italian island of Sardinia, according to local officials.
The head-on collision of a cargo train and a passenger train occurred between the towns of Bortigali and Birori, claiming the lives of a 27-year-old British woman and two Italians.
The crash also injured at least seven people, including the Canadian boyfriend of the deceased British woman.
Police commissioner Fabrizio Mustaro said that the female fatality had been identified as Elisabeth Beever, a tourist from Oxford.
The other victims were Bachisio Arca, a 53-year-old commuter and Cosimo Serra, the 45-year-old train driver, whose body is still being removed from the wreckage.
The cargo train had been carrying railway workers from Macomer to carry out works on the line and did not make its scheduled stop at Bortigali station.
Though the reasons for the crash are as yet unclear, it is believed that a "communications error" led to neither driver being aware of an oncoming train.
