The lethal H5N1 strain of avian flu has been discovered on the outskirts of Islamabad, according to Pakistani government officials.
After some 2,500 chickens died at three poultry farms last week, tests revealed a strain of the deadly virus, following which almost 10,500 birds were culled.
Rafiq-ul-Hassan Usmani, a Food and Agriculture Ministry official, confirmed the outbreak of the virus, one of several in Pakistan this year, reports Reuters.
"We took action on Tuesday and killed the remaining birds on the three farms which had some 13,000 chickens before the virus struck."
He allied fears of any further occurrences of the disease, saying: "We are keeping a close watch and there is no cause of concern."
The HN51 strain - which has killed more than 180 people since 2003 - was recently found in the Hunan province of China, with 11,000 birds killed by the disease and an additional 53,000 culled.
In both cases, no human contraction of the disease was reported.
