A gun attack in the small town of Moscow, Idaho, has left three people dead and two wounded.
The unnamed gunman opened fire at a county courthouse on Saturday, with police officer Lee Newbill shot and killed after being the first to respond to the emergency.
Two other bodies were found in a nearby church, one of which is presumed to be that of the sniper.
Assistant police chief David Duke said that local authorities had not yet established a motive for the attack: "Whoever the shooter is wanted to draw people to the courthouse. When officers responded, he did open fire on them."
He added: "He was just shooting at anybody he could."
Church sexton Paul Bauer was confirmed as the other fatality, while police deputy Brannon Jordan remains in a critical condition after pulling Officer Newbill out of the line of fire - a local civilian is in a serious but stable condition.
Police said that around 30 shots were fired at the courthouse from a parking lot after 23:00 on Saturday, before the shooter fled to the nearby First Presbyterian Church.
