Venice's St Mark's Basin is the site for the Vogalonga on May 27th, a wonderful event for rowers from all over the world.
The regatta was started in 1975 by a group of rowing revivalists and today a wonderful array of traditionally made boats and their crews make their way along the 18 mile course.
Around 50 Venetian rowing clubs generally take part and entries are welcomed from all over the world.
In past years, crews from Oxford and Cambridge have competed as well as a Chinese dragon boat team.
The day begins with a number of hymns to Saint Mark and the city, before the flotilla heads across the lagoon to the island of Burano and returns via the Grand Canal.
Many competitors take the event very seriously so, if you are planning on entering, be sure to have undertaken some good training beforehand.
