St George's day to be made public holiday?
With St George's day passing by without many of us noticing, one campaigner claims that April 23rd will soon become a public holiday.
Graham Smith, who unveiled his St George Unofficial Bank Holiday campaign last year, believes that St George's day will be another day off for British workers within three years, reports the BBC.
Mr Smith claims that following Scottish voters' backing of plans for St Andrew's day to be an extra holiday, a similar move for St David's day in Wales would mean a day off for St George's day would be inevitable.
"It will not happen next year, but I would say two or three years would be the time scale," he said.
However, the Welsh Assembly remains as resolute as the government that no change will come about.
"The present pattern of bank holidays in the United Kingdom is well-established and accepted, and the government has no current plans to change the arrangements," said a Downing Street release.
April 23rd is said to be the day of St George's death in 303.
