Microwave option for frozen colossal squid
A colossal squid which was frozen after being caught in deep Antarctic waters last month may have to be defrosted using a giant microwave, according to reports
Experts want to preserve the squid so it can be studied, but if it was defrosted at room temperature some parts of its outer flesh may rot before the centre has thawed through.
Steve O'Shea, a squid expert, was quote by the BBC as saying: "There are certain microwave equivalents that are used by industry, for treating timber and the like, that we could probably fit this thing into."
According to Mr O'Shea, the squid was measured as ten metres long and weighed 495kg.
New Zealand fisherman caught the squid while fishing for toothfish in the Antarctic waters. It took them two hours to reel it again.
The squid was then frozen and taken back to New Zealand where experts hope to study and observe what they believe is the largest specimen of its kind.
