Grand Canyon 'Skywalk' to be unveiled
A glass viewing platform overlooking the Grand Canyon is set to be unveiled today at a ceremony attended by the astronaut Buzz Aldrin, according to reports.
The remarkable structure is shaped like a horse shoe and overhangs off a section of land, giving visitors unparalleled views of the deep gorges.
Overall, it extends 70 ft from the edge of the canyon top and is designed to hold 120 people who will pay $25 (£13) for the pleasure of walking above the remarkable landscape.
The structure has been built on land belonging to the Hualapai, a native American group which agreed to the development of the attraction in an effort to raise funds for the community.
Some members of the Hualapai tribe have suggested the project could disturb sacred lands.
Sheri Yellowhawk, a former tribal councilwoman who oversaw the project, was quoted by the Daily Telegraph as saying: "When we have so much poverty and so much unemployment, we have to do something. It sounded like a good idea."
The Skywalk will be open to the public on March 28th after today's scheduled ceremony during which Mr Aldrin will be among the first to navigate the walkway.
