Fans file past 'Godfather of Soul'
Thousands of fans have gathered in Harlem to pay tribute to James Brown, the musical legend who died on Tuesday, aged 73.
Brown's body was taken to the Apollo Theatre in Harlem - where he made his live debut ? and lay in state for people to file past.
A white casket held the legend, wearing a blue suit, white gloves and silver shoes. He will journey back to his hometown of Augusta in Georgia today for a private ceremony.
Reverend Al Sharpton, a prominent civil rights activist who managed Brown in the 1970s, said: "This man stood for us, the common man."
Brown made his debut in 1956 at the Apollo Theatre and later released a live album of the show which shot straight into the Billboard top 100 chart.
He went on to achieve 17 US number one hits and became a figurehead for many people with his song Say it Loud (I'm Black and Proud).
His performances became legendary for their endless enthusiasm and energy, earning him the title the Godfather of Soul.
