Liberia's capital turns on the lights
Liberia's dilapidated capital Monrovia saw electricity restored in some parts this week.
It is the first time in 15 years that some areas of the city have seen power supplies switched back on, after years of civil war have left the city's infrastructure almost completely obliterated.
The country as a whole has suffered over the past 14 years of violence, when many power lines and water pipes were ripped up by fighters for the metal which could be turned into weapons.
President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf commented that the returning of power to parts of the capital represented an important symbolic step as the country looks to rebuild itself.
"It symbolises our journey from darkness to illumination," added the president, who came to power in democratic elections held in the country late last year and had promised to light up the capital during her first six months in charge.
However, there remains much work to be done, as the event marked the return to power for only three per cent of Monrovia.
