Dhaka hit by protests
Protestors near the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka have clashed with police as violence in the region flares.
Textile workers at a local factory began staging a protest on Monday but the scenes quickly turned violent as they clashed with police.
With the clothing industry accounting for a large proportion of the Bangladeshi economy and wages in many factories notoriously low, there is concern that the actions taken by some factory workers could be mirrored by others, causing more violence and fighting with the authorities.
One protestor was killed and around 50 people were injured in the melee, which saw two factories and around 20 vehicles set ablaze as the protests turned into riots.
According to the BBC, local police chief Jamaruddin Ahmed told AFP: "The unruly workers of the factory agitated on the streets blockading the highway and smashing vehicles."
He claimed that the protestors "forced workers at other factories to join them".
