European travellers confused
Travellers heading off for a short break or extended holiday in Europe have been urged to ensure that they fully understand the terms and conditions of the new European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
The advice follows recent research which indicated that a number of holiday makers are confused over what protection the card, which was introduced in place of the old E111 form, provides.
Figures released by Tesco Travel insurance showed that around 2.5 million people are under the impression that the EHIC completely covers travel insurance and therefore do not bother to arrange independent insurance.
This leaves them at risk from huge medical bills and also risks their health as they are not covered for being flown home in an emergency or for certain medical treatment.
As the EHIC was only introduced in January of this year, many travellers are yet to find out the full details and to arrange adequate cover, but they are advised to do so before jetting off to Europe.
