Queensland hit by cyclone
Queensland has been seriously damaged by a cyclone, with reports indicating that many areas are without power and that the majority of buildings have sustained extensive damage.
The north-east coast of Australia has been hit by Tropical Cyclone Larry and winds of around 180 miles per hour, leading to a declaration of a state of emergency.
Thousands of people are thought to be homeless, while a small number have suffered from minor injuries and as many as 50,000 homes have lost power supplies.
Prime minister John Howard expressed his relief at the lack of major injuries and pledged support for a recovery programme for the area.
"The damage to dwellings is very extensive," Mr Howard said. "Thank heavens it does not appear as though there have been any very serious injuries."
The clean-up is expected to take some time, with troops and helicopters needed to assess and carry out the operation, while local people and visitors have been warned to stay away from flooded drains and be on the look-out for snakes and crocodiles.
